GarageBand includes a complete series of Learn to Play lessons that teach you the fundamentals of guitar and piano. One guitar and one piano lesson are preinstalled on your Mac, and you can download additional lessons in GarageBand. You can also download Artist Lessons, featuring songs taught by the artists who made them famous.

You can access all your downloaded lessons (from artists or otherwise) by clicking the Learn to Play button in the menu in the sidebar and clicking on the Artist Lessons tab.

Previously, all of these apps were provided for free to customers who purchased a new Mac or iOS device, but now that purchase is not required to get the software. Many Apple customers were already likely eligible to download the software at no cost if they had made a device purchase in the last few years.

Apple's iWork page has not yet been updated and continues to say that customers will only be able to download Pages, Keynote, and Numbers after purchasing an eligible Mac or iOS device, but new wording may be added shortly following the price drop. Apple's apps have also been removed from the Top Free app charts in the App Store.

Apple has been offering these apps for free to new Mac and iOS device owners since 2013, but dropping the price to free for all users makes it less confusing and opens up downloads for those who have not recently made a new device purchase.

Update: According to a support document, today's app changes will make it easier for business and educational institutions to download Pages, Numbers, Keynote, GarageBand, and iMovie through the Volume Purchase Program store.

The iLife package, including GarageBand, iTunes, iDVD, iPhoto and iMovie, will cost $49 or will be free with new Macs, Jobs said. The company will no longer provide free downloads of iPhoto or iMovie, a strategy it seriously considered last year and that could anger some customers.

Focusing on the company's iTunes music download store, Jobs said the company had now sold more than 30 million songs, up from 25 million in mid-December. The rate of purchases spiked in late December, reaching close to 1.9 million songs a week, he said.

Jobs also showed figures from Nielsen/NetRatings that show that the iTunes store still has 70 percent of the legal online music download market, despite increasing competition from rivals such as Napster and Musicmatch.

The music store has been a core focus for Apple since last spring, when it released the first Mac-only version of the iTunes download service. The company released a Windows version in October, a move that marked Apple's only major Windows-based software, aside from its venerable QuickTime multimedia software, and underscored the importance of the download service to its corporate strategy.

The message indicates that an item could not be downloaded. You may see this message even when you think you have not tried to download or update anything. In other words, this message may seem to appear even if there are no reasons for it to appear.

Power to the Pod People will encompass all aspects of the podcasting process: scripting, digital recording, downloading audio, audio editing, publishing, and loading onto the iPod via iTunes. The workshop will begin with a brief overview of the technology required to produce a podcast, and will include handouts explaining RSS feeds, content aggregators, digital audio formatting, and online resources. Participants will work in small groups to make their own podcasts based on objects and texts brought by the instructors. As well, people may bring their own ideas for a podcast and their own laptops for the editing portion of the class.

Plan your podcast. First, imagine a fun scenario for creating a podcast. Since you're working with people from other institutions, you'll have to do a little role-playing and pretend you all work together. How do you want your audiences to use the podcast? Check under the MIDI menu | MIDI Settings and make sure that the drum channel corresponds to what your synth uses. You may need to check the documentation for your synth. You could also load a synth kit, if there is one for your particular synth, by going to MIDI | Load MIDI Setup/Drum Kit. When you select a synth from this menu and press [OK], Band-in-a-Box® will load a .DK file that matches your synth. This file will set up the GM patches, drum kit, and channels to what they should be for that synth. You are trying to run the Band-in-a-Box® application outside of the Band-in-a-Box® folder, or you are missing files from your installation for some reason. To solve this, either move the Band-in-a-Box® application back into it's folder (/Applications/Band-in-a-Box®), or reinstall the program using the Band-in-a-Box® disc or package that you downloaded via e-delivery.

Band-in-a-Box® is not being allowed to write files to the folder because of a permission problem. For example, this can happen if you are trying to run the program while logged on as a Standard User rather than an Administrator, and the Band-in-a-Box® folder is set to Read-only for that group. To solve this problem, download and install the latest update patch for your version.

Depending on your web browser and settings, the file may be automatically downloaded to a folder on your computer without prompting you for a location to save the file. The default for the Safari web browser is normally the 'Downloads' folder in your Home folder. For example, if your User account is 'MyUserName', then the download will be placed in \Users\MyUserName\Downloads. In Safari, you can change this setting if you want, by going to Safari | Preferences | General ('save downloaded files to'). In Firefox, the setting is in Firefox | Preferences ('Save files to').

Most of the recent videos on our website applicable to Band-in-a-Box® for Macintosh use Flash, so if you can watch YouTube videos you should be able to watch the videos on our site. If you downloaded an .AVI file, or if you are trying to play a .MOV file on disk, you should be able to play the file with Quicktime.
