This lesson is very similar to the first. Here too, students read text to answer questions, then provide their own interpretations of the data. This time they delve into the literature to find more information on HPV, and how it relates to cervical cancer. They also do a problem set where they study the cell cycle as a whole, including mitosis. They share their findings in a lab report.

We also discuss the difference between cancer and cancer stem cells. The experiment culminates with students creating a poster. I use this project as a culminating activity for my AP Biology class.

The final activity is an experiment. We use glass vials for a cancer cells vs. normal cells experiment. Students observe that cancer cells grow at a much faster rate than normal cells and that cancer cells are often able to bypass the cell cycle checkpoints. We then analyze the data using the data to answer the following questions: What are the most successful cancer cells? What are the most successful cells? How does the percentage of cancer cells change over time?
