How to use Exe2Aut to decompile AutoIt executables
Exe2Aut is a tool that comes with AutoIt installation and allows you to decompile AutoIt executables back to their original script source code. This can be useful if you have lost the original script file or want to modify an existing executable. However, there are some limitations and requirements for using Exe2Aut successfully.
Requirements
You need to have the same version of AutoIt that was used to compile the executable. You can check the version of AutoIt by right-clicking on the executable and selecting Properties > Version. You can download previous versions of AutoIt from here[^1^].
You need to know the password if the executable was compiled with one. Exe2Aut will prompt you for the password when you try to decompile the executable.
You need to have permission from the original author of the script if you want to decompile it for any purpose other than personal use. Decompiling someone else's script without their consent may be considered unethical or illegal.
Steps
Locate the Exe2Aut.exe file in your AutoIt installation folder. It is usually found in C:\\Program Files (x86)\\AutoIt3\\Aut2Exe or C:\\Program Files\\AutoIt3\\Aut2Exe.
Drag and drop the executable file that you want to decompile onto the Exe2Aut.exe file. Alternatively, you can run Exe2Aut.exe from the command line with the following syntax: Exe2Aut.exe /in nnnn [/out nnnn] [/pass nnnn], where /in specifies the input executable file, /out specifies the output script file (optional), and /pass specifies the password (optional).
If the executable was compiled with a password, enter it when prompted by Exe2Aut. If you don't know the password, you won't be able to decompile the executable.
If you didn't specify an output file name, Exe2Aut will create a script file with the same name as the executable in the same folder. You can open this file with any text editor or with SciTE, the AutoIt script editor.
Edit or modify the script as you wish. You can also recompile it with Aut2Exe if you want to create a new executable.
Limitations
Exe2Aut may not work with executables that were compiled with older versions of AutoIt (before v3.2.12.1) or with third-party tools that modify or encrypt AutoIt executables.
Exe2Aut may not be able to recover all the information from the executable, such as comments, variable names, or formatting. The decompiled script may look different from the original one, but it should still function correctly.
Exe2Aut may not be able to decompile executables that contain malicious code or viruses. You should always scan any executable file that you download or receive from unknown sources with an antivirus program before trying to decompile it.
