Now here's some good news. With upcoming Catalyst 6.5 drivers you'll be able to hook up similar Radeon X1000 series graphics cards up-to the X1800 GTO without the need for a master card AND you do not need the Y-Cable. Just plug these cards preferably onto a (2x) x16 PCI-Express lane mainboard and it should work. That's really good news.
We see similar behavior today as we partner up an X1900 XT and x1900 XTX card. The XTX will be downclocked towards the XT speeds and you drop 75 USD in the trash bin. So if you decide to go high-end Crossfire simply buy the XT and the XT Crossfire edition cards. Let's have an overlook of the products available at this time and age.
After mainboard installation it was time for the Catalyst drivers. We took the latest Catalyst 6.3 Control Center Edition drivers and installed them. I tried to enable the Crossfire tag in the drivers and yes .. I realized I made another mistake.
Here's the thing, when you look at the Crossfire y-cable you'll have a DVI connector leading from it. Your monitor must to be connected to that specific connector. My bad, I had the monitor connected towards the lower standard DVI port on the master card. This photo shows the initial connection, the monitor was connected to the lower DVI connector. In this configuration you can't enable Crossfire mode in the Catalyst drivers.

Thank you very much, I experience severe problems with my brand new Acer Aspire 8935 G Laptop. When installing Windows 7 the compatibility check indicated an issue with the display, but I went on with the installation. I started the download now and hope this will solve my problem.
No, the ATI installer may not work, it refused to on mine, unable to write to some spote in memory, what I did was use the device manager and update it, pointing to the packages/drivers directory in the install folder of ATI. Now what ATI did on my graphics card is fail to put the driver for my card in that installation package, although it stated the package was for my board. If the driver information is there, to update the windows driver, windows should install it as an update. If it refuses to, it may be that your board does not have the real driver inf in that package and you might have to look around ATI for other packages for your driver, but still install them as an update in the device manager.
I apologize for this question in advance because most people would advise me to use the machine as a doorstop and just spring for a new one. Alas, I admittedly have difficulty letting go of the old girl because she still gets the job done. The \"old girl\" in this case is an HP Pavillion ZV5330 laptop but it is equipped with a respectable 3.2Ghz HT Intel processor, only 1 GB of RAM and worst, an ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000/9100 IGP graphics card.Windows 7, VS 2010 and everything else actually runs great on the machine and aside from the touchpad and audio not working (which I can live with) there is no video driver available from HP or ATI, so it defaults to 1024 x 768 using the Windows generic driver. My question is, do you know of any way (short of writing a driver from scratch) that the video card could be made to work or at minimum, the resolution could be improved at allAny guidance would be greatly appreciated. If not, there will be a memorial service sometime in the near future.Thank you in advance!Michael
I have windows vista business 64-bit and have a Radeon X1300/X1550 PCIE card in the system. Never had a problem under XP, when I went to vista business (not an upgrade but a clean install) I added the card and got the drivers for it and installed. For the first year I didn't really have any problems, then I started occasionally getting the ATIMKDG stopped responded and we've restarted it. Today it peaked at one about every 5 minutes. I haven't changed anything significant so the only thing it could be was windows updates or something I tweaked... (I checked memory, bios settings, system temperature, temperatures on the card, ALL GOOD)... sooo After googling I tried removing a windows update that was suggested might be the culprit, did not help.
Ultimately I found that going into DISPLAY PREFERENCES for windows vista business, and turning off a lot of the \"sliding menus\", \"transparency\", etc. the problem has gone away almost completely. It appears that these features of windows are exercising some activity in the ATI driver that is buggy. My specs:
Our lesson here is exactly this: every machine component, software and hardware, even socialware effects every other component. You may love your fav old usb drive plugged in the back out-of-sight-and-care, but the instant that plug-in'sMANUFACTURE slips out of driver support, your entire system is IMMEDIATELY AT RISK.
Note this tables mainly applies to x86 machines. We make a best effort to support PowerPC/Sun cards with OpenFirmware, but we cannot always support these due to Apple/Sun hardcoding most of the details in their drivers.
The new radeonhd driver was initially to offer the sole support for R500/R600/R700 cards, but nowadays also the radeon driver supports those. It's therefore overlapping with radeon's card support, and radeonhd might be merged to radeon at some point if there's no use for a separate \"newer\" driver.
Until driver version 6.7, if you wanted to use HW accelerated 3D on both heads of a dualheaded radeon card, you had to use the Radeon MergedFB option by AlexDeucher. Since version 6.7, the driver supports Randr 1.2, which allows screen hot (un)plugging, and dynamic multiheads. Just try \"xrandr --auto\" to get to biggest possible mode. A big \"Virtual\" option is needed to allow big multiheads.
