The Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) is a lifecycle management tool that assists in identifying and managing your overall application portfolio, reducing the cost and time involved in resolving application compatibility issues, and helping you quickly deploy Windows and Windows updates.

I'm actually going to create a new package to verify compatibility for Windows Vista. The first thing I need to do is give my package a name - in this case, I am calling it Vista_Evaluator. Because Windows Vista includes Internet Explorer 7, I want to make sure that I can verify application compatibility for IE7 as well. If I click on the "Advanced" button, I have the option to include the IE Compatibility Evaluator (IECE) with this package. The other options I am setting for this particular package are to have the package run for one day on the client, with data uploads being performed every two hours.

The Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) is a set of program utilities and documents provided free of charge by Microsoft to support the life-cycle management of application compatibility issues in large scale installations of the Windows operating system.

ACT is a tool for organizations with large numbers of installed PCs running Windows. ACT assists decision makers in evaluating which applications are compatible with the proposed upgrade and which ones need further testing. The ACT helps customers understand their application-compatibility situations by identifying applications that are compatible with the Windows 7 operating system and applications that require further testing. ACT helps customers lower their costs for application-compatibility testing, prioritize their applications, and deploy Windows 7 more quickly.

You can use the ACT features to:1. Verify an application's compatibility with a new version of the Windows operating system, or a Windows Update, including determining your risk assessment.2. Become involved in the ACT Community, including sharing your risk assessment with other ACT users.3. Test your Web applications and Web sites for compatibility with new releases and security updates to the Windows Internet Explorer Internet browser.

This includes detection for the use of winmail.exe, milcore.dll, outlook.exe, and msagent.exe.2. Support for 64-bit Operating Systems and ApplicationsACT now supports both running on and providing issue detection for 64-bit operating systems and applications.3. ACT and MAP are enterprise tools. If you have to manage only a small network, the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor is probably the better choice. It lacks the central inventory capabilities of the other two compatibility evaluation tools. Therefore, you have to install all your applications on your test machine if you want to evaluate their Windows 7 compatibility. If you have PCs with different hardware, you have no other choice than to run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor on each of those computers.

Note: all the examples in this document are created using system applications (like Task Manager and Character Map). System applications do not have a compatibility tab so this setting cannot be adjusted.
