In Hinduism, adi Surya is believed to be an incarnation of Durga, the goddess of power. As the sun of the planet earth, Surya is the manifestation of the cosmic law in the form of the wind; this is the cosmic law of the nature of the living being. The sun, which is the source of light, heat and life, is an embodiment of the cosmic law, which is the cause of the death of the living being. The soul of the living being is known as the Atma and Atma is the eternal life principle. The Atma, in itself, is eternal and blissful, but it is the body, which is the physical manifestation of Atma, that is subject to the law of death. The Atma is beyond the law of time and therefore it is eternal. It is the Atma that exists in every manifestation of the living being. The Atma, which is the one without physical form, is the vehicle of the manifest universe. The manifest universe is the universe of the living being. The Atma is the very essence of the physical and vital energy or the prana.
